THE ESSINGTON SCHOOL DARWIN – AN ACCREDITED CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

The Essington School Darwin is well known for its high academic outcomes on national and international assessments, and for its innovative educational programs. In recent years the School has set its sights on increasing its focus on international standards with a number of new initiatives.

International Education Accreditations

The Essington School Darwin is the only school in the Northern Territory to be accredited at an international standard by both the Council of International Schools (CIS) and by Cambridge University’s Cambridge Institute as a Cambridge International School.

In 2013 the School was accredited as a Cambridge International School by Cambridge University’s Cambridge Institute after a rigorous review. It is now able to deliver their courses and to be an examination centre for Cambridge Institute programs. The Essington School Darwin was the sixth school in Australia to be accredited as a Cambridge International School. It is the only school in the Northern Territory to be accredited to delivery Cambridge programs from primary school to senior secondary school. From 2019 it will be the only school in the Northern Territory delivering an international secondary education curriculum program.

The international curriculum from the United Kingdom’s Cambridge Institute is delivered in over 9,000 schools in 160 countries. The School has joined with about twenty leading schools in Australia to be amongst the first schools in Australia to offer established Cambridge primary and secondary international programs along with the Australian curriculum. Middle School students have begun to complete subjects from the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) whilst completing Australian curriculum requirements..

Students at The Essington International Senior College at Charles Darwin University are also able to study Cambridge senior secondary and university preparation subjects.

Cambridge International Curriculum Programs

Increasingly the school is extending its Australian curriculum and programs with high quality international curriculum and programs. Since the beginning of 2015 the School has introduced, in conjunction with the Australian curriculum, the international Cambridge Education curriculum. The programs introduced are the Cambridge Primary Program and subjects from the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in the School’s Middle School.

A number of countries in the top ten countries in the world are focusing on international curricula and programs to maintain and extend their country’s learning outcomes. The Essington School Darwin is keen to further extend our students performance on national and international assessments by using well established Cambridge Education international curriculum programs.

Singapore, one of the top five countries on international education standards, uses Cambridge Education curriculum programs in all of its schools.

In recent years The Essington School Darwin’s international view of education has produced outstanding results on national literacy and numeracy assessments, and also on international assessments.

Our students will live and work in an increasingly internationalized world and will require skills and knowledge to allow them to fully participate and contribute to the world they will live in. High education standards and skills that develop communication, flexibility and teamwork will be important to their success.
