We believe that all students at The Essington School Darwin have the right to access a broad and balanced education that will prepare them for participation in society. We believe that they have a right to an education that is best suited to their individual cognitive, social, emotional and physical needs.
The overall aim of our Individual Student Programs is to maximise the educational opportunities and outcomes for all students. The School’s commitment to meeting the individual needs of all students means that flexible, open-ended programming is a required aspect of all classrooms. All teachers are committed to the concept of providing programs which allow students to progress from different starting points according to their abilities.
Our Individual Student Programs cater for gifted and talented students as well as students with disabilities and impairments. The Essington School Darwin utilises a variety of strategies and programs in order to meet the varying needs of students with special needs.
The Individual Student Programs Coordinator works closely with the Special Education Teacher and classroom teachers, in devising negotiated individual and group programs to cater for a range of students with special needs. They also work closely with outside professional agencies and parents to identify needs and develop specialised programs.
The Essington School Darwin works closely with external services and professional agencies, such as Early Intervention - Student Services (NT Department of Education), Carpentaria Children’s Services, speech pathologists, optometrists, psychologists, etc., to ensure the provision of an appropriate educational program and classroom setting.
